On Wednesday night, Georgia handed Arkansas its first loss at home in a 60 - 59 victory http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/boxscore?gid=201102020019  . The key was limiting the Hogs' Rotnei Clarke to just 8 shots, only making 3 of them, including 2 of 4 from long range. Do you see a trend on how to beat Arkansas...defending Clarke has to be your primary focus. I bet Vandy and coach Kevin Stallings would like another shot at Clarke after he burned the ' Dores with 36 last week.

 

Arkansas 6 ' 9 senior forward, Delvon Johnson, impersonated both an SEC star who graduated last year and a current SEC freshman . His 7 blocked shots reminded us of former Mississippi State center, Jarvis Varnado, the all-time career NCAA leader in blocked shots http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNoAwyoRMNE . On the other hand, Johnson's paltry 1 for 6 at the free throw line were the exact numbers of Florida freshman, Will Yeguete, in his last game against Vanderbilt. I attended the strangest college basketball game Thursday night, when Davidson defeated Samford 62 - 49 http://samfordsports.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/stats/2010-2011/sam0203.html . First of all, because of icy and sleet conditions, the Samford website discouraged fans from attending, indicating it was a a "closed-door event". I had driven a few hours earlier and slightly spun a bit so I could understand making safety a priority. But, near game time, the conditions improved so I went ahead and it was not dangerous at all. There must have been 100 or so in the stands.

 

Here is the stat that blew me away. I have never seen it before, especially by a team like Samford that runs the "Princeton Offense" emphasizing backdoor layups. Samford had 2 assists during the game. That's right 2 and none by a starter.

 

I decided to look at the NCAA definition of "assist" http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/Stats_Manuals/Basketball/2010EZ.pdf  thinking maybe I don't know exactly what it is. On page 9 it indicates that an assist is "when the player makes, in the judgment of the statistician, the principal pass contributing directly to a field goal.....An assist should be more than a routine pass that just happens to be followed by a field goal. It should be a conscious effort to find the open player or to help a player work free."  Nothing new there.

 

How can that happen just two times in 40 minutes by a team, especially one known for passing? I guess a lot of the credit goes to Davidson's coach Bob McKillop who had his team playing tough defense on the perimeter and in the paint.

 

I now have another stat to examine when I look at box scores...in previous blogs, I noted the rare stat of a three-pointer shooter missing all of his double-digit attempts which I check for regularly.... from now on I will also look for a miniscule team assists number!  Yes, I need therapy, but all college basketball junkies like us, generally do. On Thursday night, Tennessee got a break at Auburn. With star Scotty Hopson out with a sprained ankle, the Volunteers were a bit vulnerable. However, War Eagle starting center 6 ' 10 Rob Chubb also missed the game because of an indefinite suspension for violation of team rules and they were no match for the Vols 69 - 56  http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recap?gid=201102030028 . Chubb had just scored a career high 18 points in his previous game when Auburn upset South Carolina at Columbia.

The Bulldogs are in 5th place in the Horizon League and have a 14 - 9 record overall, including losing 4 of their last 5. What a difference a year makes! Losing Gordon Hayward to the NBA draft and the Utah Jazz has been devastating. I found another free amazing website for basketball junkies http://statsheet.com/mcb . I do want to warn you that you could spend a crazy amount of time looking at the stats it offers.

 

For example, I love the +/- stat which indicates the difference between points scored and points given up by a team while a certain player is on the court during a game. This website also lets you see the +/- stat for when a player is not in the game. Then it subtracts the two, calling it RR (Roland Rating) which quantifies how much better or worse a team played during the game when a player was on the court compared to when he was on the bench.

 

Go to http://statsheet.com/mcb/players/player/florida/kenny-boynton/plus_minus .  Many Gator fans were disappointed in Kenny Boynton's play in last Saturday's loss at Mississippi State and this shows why. During the 30 minutes Boynton was on the court the Gators scored 43 points but gave up 64 for a +/- of -21. When he was on the bench, the Gators scored 21 points and only gave up 7 for a +/- of 14. Therefore, during the game the Gators were 35 points (RR) worse off when Boynton played than when he didn't play. To Boynton's defense, he has had only 4 other negative RR ratings and 3 of them were in Gator wins. 

 

Also, the website shows a similar set of +/- figures for players during Clutch time, the last 5 minutes of regulation and OT when the deficit is 5 points or less. Boynton has 5 games with a negative RR numbers compared to 2 games with a positive RR in Clutch situations.

 

Of course this is not an exact measurement of a player's performance because of the other 4 teammates on the court and which players of the opposing team are playing, but it surely can show a trend. 

 

It is endless with regard to what you can find on this website. Now go check out your favorite team and you can really find out how its players have performed this year or in recent years. THAT'S IT

Anthony Grant and his surging Crimson Tide remain undefeated at home after its 75 - 61 win over Mississippi State http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/boxscore?gid=201102020006 . They are playing with such confidence. Tony Mitchell has become the star we expected him to be, coming from the famous Birmingham basketball school, Central Park Christian (Rod Grizzard, James Lang,  Marco Killingsworth and bloggee Rye Zinder are some of the alumni who went on to have fine careers in the college ranks . http://blog.al.com/sentell/2009/04/central_park_christian_is_prep.html )

I am already looking forward to March 1st when the Tide and the Gators match up on ESPN in front of the Rowdy Reptiles. I would not mind it if they played one or even two more times this season. NEXT

 

On Wednesday night I attended Southern Miss's 75 - 71 upset win and came away impressed with the star of the game, 6' 8 forward Gary Flowers.  Although he was only 7 for 18 from the field, he nailed 3 of 5 threes and ended up with a game-hight 22 points.  What was most memorable was the blanket job he put on UAB 6' 10 star Cameron Moore, limiting him to 0 for 5 in field goal attempts. The last time I saw Moore play, he scored 28 against Kent State.

 

Would you believe 64 of UAB's 71 points were scored by just 3 players and it was an even higher percentage before Moore canned three free throws in the last minute, his only points of the game. Orlando's Dexter Fields did sink 8 out of 11 long balls for the Blazers. But a tip of the hat to Southern Miss veteran coach Larry Eustachy (remember him from his Iowa State days with Marcus Fizer) for leading the troops to a tough road win, especially when Southern Miss was down by 12 in the first few minutes of the game, thanks to Fields' radar shooting.

Most basketball junkies enjoy following exceptional individual performances by a player. In a previous blog, I noted that the country's top Division I free throw shooter (men's and women's) is Samford's Emily London. On Wednesday night at Chattanooga http://samfordsports.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/stats/2010-2011/sam0202.html , Emily converted all four of her free throws in a 60 - 53 win, increasing her percentage to 97.3 on 71 of 73 attempts for the season ! 

 

A few weeks ago I sat with Emily at a men's basketball postgame event and the personable senior guard seemed to be an even better person than a free throw shooter  http://samfordsports.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/mtt/london_emily00.html . An All-BB (Barry's Blog) player, Xavier's Tu Holloway had a nightmare night in Wednesday's 66 -62 loss at struggling Charlotte http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/boxscore?gid=201102020395 . He shot 3 for 17 including 0 for 8 from beyond the arc and 6 turnovers. Holloway did shoot an Emily London-like 6 for 6 on his free throws (he was 17 for 17 last game....86.7 % for the year). Of course, Gator fans don't like to see one of their top non-conference victims suffer a bad defeat like this. NEXT

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When I think of Tom Izzo's Michigan State Spartans (5 - 5 in the Big Ten and 13 - 9  overall) after last night's ugly 72 - 52 loss at Big Ten cellar dweller Iowa, I can hear Vince Lombardi's classic line captured on NFL Films, "What the hell is going on out here?" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocV5bGHdYag . The Spartans have lost 4 out of 5 and I saw portions of the one win last Sunday when they squeaked by Indiana in overtime and were fortunate to do so. The regular Final Four participant needs to turn it around quickly or they will be featured on the dreaded NIT Selection Show. Three of their next five games are at ranked conference opponents, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Minnesota.

Also the recent dismissal of PG  Korie Lucious (whose buzzer-beater against Maryland hurt my bracket last year)  has not helped. The Gators offered "free basketball" to its fans and TV viewers again, playing overtime to beat the talented Vanderbilt Commodores 65 - 61 on Tuesday night http://www.gatorzone.com/story.php?id=19709 . Kenny Boynton showed why he can be one of the best defensive players in the conference. After shutting out Arkansas's Rotnei Clarke 10 days ago, he did a remarkable job on the SEC's number one scorer, my favorite, John Jenkins.  

 

If you look at the box score you would see that Jenkins scored 22 points on 8 for 14 shooting and say to yourself that he had a solid game against his defender. But if you watched the game, you would conclude differently. Jenkins only was able to get off 6 three-point shots. He made just two of them and they were both ridiculous with Boynton in his face. Most of his 6 two-point baskets were on a fast break or when Boynton was not guarding him, either on a switch because of a tough screen or Boynton was not in the game. Freshman Scottie Wilbekin, two months from his 18th birthday, also played some smothering defense on Jenkins.

 

Some final thoughts on the game:

 

1. Assistant Coach Larry Shyatt should be commended for a wonderful defensive plan that also led to outrebounding the 'Dores by 25 on Florida's defensive boards.

 

2. If Boynton can be more consistent with his outside shooting, this Gator team can be scary. He did have the clutch game-winning three in overtime. No doubt, the energy expended with his shadowing defense does take away from his offense and the Orange and Blue needs to have others step up offensively like Chandler Parsons did last night with 18 points, including a much improved 5 for 6 from the free throw line..

 

3. On a sour note, the Gators centers (Vernon Macklin, Will Yeguete and Patric Young) shot a combined 2 for 10 from the free throw line and many of them weren't even close. I am running out of suggestions. Do any of you former coaches have Billy D on your speed dial and can offer him ideas?

 

4. I still love Vandy as a Sweet Sixteen team with my guy Jenkins leading the way. Orlando bloggee Richie was at the game and he indicated that Vandy 6' 11 275 lb center, Festus Ezeli,  was constantly disruptive in the middle before fouling out in 20 minutes. The Commodores will need him to stay on the floor to make some March inroads for the team (and for my expected bracket). NEXT

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On Tuesday night I turned to ESPN at 7:55 Central to see if the early game was going beyond two hours, interfering with the start of the Vandy - Florida game. (Sometimes when that happens, on ESPN non-HD, the network will start its second game as scheduled).  I saw a crawl that indicated Kentucky was ahead of Mississippi on ESPNU by 1 point with less than 20 seconds. I quickly switched over and saw Chris Warren hit the game-winning three for the Rebels with a few seconds left in Mississippi's 71 - 69 thrilling victory at the Tad http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recap?gid=201102010365 . 

 

Warren is a player in the John Jenkins category of "hate to face him" and I will certainly be glad when he graduates this year. Can you imagine if he went to the University of Florida, just 110 miles north, joining Boynton and Erving Walker in the backcourt?  Why didn't that happen? NEXT

 

 

 

 

 

 

Uh-Oh. North Carolina freshman Harrison Barnes is starting to live up to his pre-season first team All-American potential. He scored 25 points on Saturday against NC State. On Tuesday night in Chestnut Hill, the Tar Heels smashed Boston College 106 -74 http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/boxscore?gid=201102010058 led by Barnes and his 26 points on 9 for 15 shooting, 4 for 7 from deep. The Heels' starters were 13 for 14 from the gift lane (including Barnes 4 for 4) and you know how I admire that stat, especially on the road.

 

Carolina Blue has now won 9 of 10 and the smell of Durham and the Blue Devils is just 8 days away. In between, the Tar Heels host FSU on Sunday which could be a "trap game", but it is being held in Chapel Hill which will help. After an NIT trip last year and a 4 - 3 November, Roy Williams is ready to make his traditional NCAA run. NEXT

 

 

 

 

 

In prior blogs, it was mentioned how rare it is to see a player shoot 10 or more times beyond tha arc in a game and convert on none of them. Well, Birmingham bloggee Terry reminded me of a famous game in Birmingham two years ago when nemesis Memphis defeated UAB 71 - 60. The Blazers' Robert Vaden was 0 for 17, 12 of those attempts were deep ones  http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?page=instant0226 . 1. Belmont - experienced tournament coach in Rick Byrd with solid overall team. Of their top 6 scoring players, only 2 start.

 

2. Old Dominion - infatuated with their consistent dominating rebounding. Frank Hassell at 6' 8 245 lb is the Monarch's enforcer.

 

3. Drexel - same conference as ODU so may be tough, but love their toughness under Bruiser Flynt.

 

4. Xavier - I might be developing a hoops man-crush on Tru Holloway who can score.

 

5. Wofford - will get a better feel after seeing them in Birmingham against Samford on February 16th but Noel Dahlman is already The Man. In his last five games, including Saturday when he went 15 of 17, the 6' 6 senior forward is shooting 74.7 percent from the field (56 of 75).

 

 

With regard to Belmont, the Jacksonville bloggees can see them free this Thursday night at 7:15 at the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena, courtesy of a local seafood company. Nashville's music university will be challenged by my favorite scrappy squad, Jacksonville University, led by former Birmingham Huffman High star,  6' 5 senior forward Ayron Hardy a pesky ball thief in NCAA's top 40 with over 2 steals a game. You Make Me Feel Old  While I was watching the San Diego State - BYU game last Wednesday night, something got my attention and it wasn't the nation's leading scorer, the Cougars' Jimmer Fredette. I heard that the son of Lonnie Shelton, 6' 7 junior forward Tim Shelton, was playing for the Aztecs. No way...wasn't it just a few years ago when Lonnie helped the Seattle Supersonics and Downtown Freddie Brown win the NBA Championship. Sorry, Barry, it was over 31 years ago in 1979. Tim Shelton, You Make Me Feel Old.

As I mentioned in a previous blog, I saw Raftery coach Seton Hall in a holiday basketball tournament at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL a little less than 40 years ago. He stole the show with his numerous technical fouls and antics and reminded me of a Bobby Knight on the sidelines rather than his cool, folksy on the air persona. One of our bloggees, Dr. Glenn Wilkes, coached Stetson University in that tournament and surely remembers the "wild man".

To football, The South rises again, specifically in Saturday's Senior Bowl, 24 -10. The only Gator who ended up playing was Chas Henry.  The Ray Guy Award Winner punted 6 times for a 44.8 yard average, with two inside the 20. If someone asked me why Florida lost at Mississippi State 71 - 64 on Saturday  http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/boxscore?gid=201101290366, I would give them two answers:  free throw shooting and Kenny Boynton's subpar performance. Mississippi State should be commended for knocking down 19 of 23 free throws while Florida only converted 9 of 19. Boynton never had a free throw attempt after going 12 for 12 against Georgia last Tuesday. Plus his 2 for 11 shooting including 0 for 4 from beyond the arc helped doom the Gators. Boynton, a McDonalds High School All-American has shown flashes of brilliance in his two years at Gainesville, but his lack of consistency hurts Florida on his off days like this one. How frustrating it must be for Billy D (and me). NEXT

 

 

 

 

 

There is a bunch of excitement about college basketball this past weekend in the Birmingham, Alabama area after Saturday's results:

 

 

1. Alabama smeared (remember that playground term) LSU 70 - 47 in sold-out Coleman Coliseum http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/recap?gid=201101290006 . Looking ahead at its final 10 games http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/teams/aaf/schedule, road tilts against TN (next Saturday), Vandy (Feb 10th) and Florida (March 1st) and the home finale against Georgia (March 5th) look to be the most difficult (not coincidentally, all against the SEC East). The other six games should go into the victory column.

 

However, you never know after seeing the shocking Arkansas 89 - 78 upset at Vandy http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/boxscore?gid=201101290615 , when Rotnei Clarke exploded with 36 points on    75 % accuracy both within and outside the arc.  I watched portions of that game and noticed the defender assigned to Rotnei would sometimes help double-team the ball leaving Clarke wide open. Last Saturday, it looked like the Gators shadowed him with a defender wherever he went no matter where the ball was and they limited him to 0 for 3 shooting. Vandy Coach Kevin Stallings, "you have some 'splaining to do. " 

 

2. Auburn "shocked the world" with its 79 - 64 road victory against South Carolina http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/boxscore?gid=201101290525 . It was a "blue collar" victory for Tony Barbee and his War Eagles, making only 1 three-pointer and outrebounding the Gamecocks 45 - 32. Like their football counterparts, Auburn appears to be "all in" http://auburntigers.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/012211aab.html with respect to Barbee's tough-minded philosophy. This first SEC win for Coach Barbee might cause him to skip from Auburn to Birmingham on Monday to speak to the Birmingham Tipoff Club at noon http://www.birminghamtipoffclub.com/ .

 

3. UAB took the nonstop Southwest Airlines flight to Orlando which I have probably done 100 times. The Blazers ended up loving the flight, especially the one back home celebrating its 74 - 69  win over another of this season's "Gator Killers", UCF and Marcus "son of you-know-who" Jordan http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/boxscore?gid=201101290103 . UAB is tied for first in Conference USA and as long as sophomore Dexter Fields (from Orlando), shoots threes like he did in this personal homecoming going 5 for 7, look out! NEXT

 

 

 

 

 

 

When glancing at a box score, it looks odd to see a team not have anyone in double figures. That is what happened to the Duke-conquering Florida State Seminoles in its 62 - 44 road loss at Clemson http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/boxscore?gid=201101290120 . Part of the problem is stud 6' 9 junior forward, Chris Singleton, is in a funk, averaging less than 8 points over his last 4 games http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/players/81076 . Once again the Monarchs of ODU outrebounded their opponent, but this time is was by a 32 - 10 margin. Ten rebounds?
